Field & Harvest Coordinator

Hourly Employment – 40 hour week - April through October seasonal with opportunity to work year round
Reports to: Operations Manager


Crossroads Farm is an educational and working farm, you can expect to engage with program participants, volunteers, and farm visitors of all ages. We are a NOFA certified organic farm that employs biodynamic farming principles. Work in a nurturing environment to make a difference in the community!


Role and Responsibilities:
  • Following the plans and direction of the Operations Manager in the management of 2.5‐acre diversified NOFA certified organic vegetable farm, including surrounding fields, farm site, and other infrastructure

  • Execute the approved crop plan and succession plantings, record seeding, planting, amendments, harvest and toss, note insect and disease sightings into farm records. Follow NOFA organic regulations

  • Tractor work and maintenance, including light to no tillage, weed cultivation, and mowing

  • Manual field work, not limited to hoeing, hand-weeding, irrigation set-up and management, pest and disease management, etc.

  • Harvest, washing, and packing for weekly market and possible CSA

  • Pick-up east end and delivery as needed

  • Occasionally attend farmers’ market or direct apprentices

  • Oversee apprentices, volunteers and students while they are in the field, coordinate volunteer schedule, training and engagement

  • Assist Education Program Director with on/off-farm demonstrations and lessons

  • Assist with on-farm workshops and field days as needed

  • Early morning start during growing season, daily schedule can be flexible with opportunity to work weekend schedule or Saturday and/or Sunday availability a must on a rotating schedule with other field hands

  • Assist with marketing of produce for retail store, social media and advertising

  • Assist Operations Manager with equipment repairs and material ordering

  • Oversee/manage the cleanliness and maintaining of harvest, pack and storage areas to include shared barn areas and walk-in units

  • Maintain proper sanitation of refrigeration units and adhere to good practices

  • Coordinate post-harvest handling from field to retail and train farm stand associates on proper management of produce both during
    shift and at shift end when putting away produce

  • Be able to discuss Crossroads Farm, including its history, core values, mission and vision

  • Maintain enthusiasm, good attitude, honesty, and a willingness to treat customers, visitors to the farm and all volunteers and
    co-workers with respect. Must have good work ethic and believe in delivering a quality product to our consumers


Requirements:
  • Two or more years of organic or low-input/sustainable vegetable production experience required.

  • Tractor experience as related to diversified vegetable farming is required.

  • Knowledge of post-harvest crop handling and storage to maximize freshness.

  • Must be able to work independently, be very self-motivated and have a solid work ethic, with a sense of
    urgency toward farm work and a sense of humor.

  •  Must be able to take direction, as well as problem-solve independently.

  • Must be able to work in any weather and lift over 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to use a computer for record keeping, excel & documents, emails and company software* (*company software training provided)

  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

  • You may be asked to work up to 60 hours week during peak farm season with reduced hours during the shoulder seasons


Preferred Skills:

Apprentice supervision/team leadership a plus. Experience with greenhouse and high tunnel management, including plant propagation
and season extension. CSA program

Salary Range: $17 to $19 hourly dependent on experience

Field Helper

Qualifications and Education Requirements:
Strong desire to learn organic or low-input/sustainable vegetable production, experience is a plus. Must be self-motivated and have a solid work ethic, with a sense of urgency toward farm work. Must be able to take direction, as well as problem-solve independently. Must be able to work in any weather and lift over 50 lbs. Must be able to use a computer for record keeping, excel & documents, emails and *company software (*you will be trained). You may be asked to work up to 60 hours week during peak farm season with reduced hours during the shoulder seasons.


Preferred Skills:

Tractor experience is a plus, as well as experience with greenhouse growing including plant propagation. Post-harvest crop handling and storage. Cashier skills or the ability to learn.


Salary Range: $15 to $17 hourly and can commensurate with experience

Farm Stand Head Associate

Hourly Employment – up to 30 hour week *April through December seasonal position with possible opportunity to work year round

Job Description:
  • The Farm Stand Head Associate assists the retail operation of the farm stand at Crossroads Farm on Fridays, Saturdays, and/or Sunday. May also be required to assist during various fundraising events

  • Create and maintain a positive work environment for all associates

  • Point of contact for vendors including farmers market and vendor fee collection

  •  Communicate stock levels and order information to the ops manager

  • Communicate with customers and address any problems they may have

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for farm stand associates including scheduling of shifts

  • Operate registers and perform general checkout functions

  • Resolve cash tills when closing, ensuring the money matches the report and is stored safely

  • Provide marketing and social media content

  • Responsible to maintain the general upkeep, cleanliness, and appearance inside and around the farm stand

  • Duties include prepping produce for display. Assist with after harvest preparation and some harvest when required. Must follow proper food safety and proper produce display & storage methods, quality is paramount.

Farm Stand Associate

Job Description:
The Farm Stand Associate will assist Crossroads Farm on Fridays, Saturdays, and/or Sunday and may also be required to assist during various fundraising events and off site markets. Associates provide a pleasant customer experience by answering questions and finding effective solutions to concerns, are also responsible for keeping the farm looking stand neat, organized and well stocked. Duties include prepping produce for display, assist with after harvest preparation and some harvest when required. Must follow proper food safety and proper produce display and storage methods, quality is paramount.


Basic Job Requirements:
  • Have knowledge of produce display and storage (or willing to learn)

  • Operate registers and perform general checkout functions

  • Assist in creating and restocking produce/product displays

  • Maintain the general upkeep, cleanliness, and appearance inside and around the farm stand

  • Be able to arrive at the farm stand at least one hour prior to listed store opening time

  • Be able to discuss Crossroads Farm, including its history, core values, mission and vision

  • Maintain enthusiasm, good attitude, honesty, and a willingness to treat customers, visitors to the farm and all volunteers and co-workers with respect. Must have good work ethic and believe in delivering a quality product to our consumers

Education Field Helper

Hourly Employment -15-20 hrs./week – Seasonal: April through October seasonal

  • Manual field work not limited to planting, weeding, irrigation set-up and management, pest and disease management. 

  • Assist volunteers and students while they are in the field, assist with on/off farm demonstrations and lessons and assist with on-farm workshops, field days and events as needed

  • Early morning start during growing season, daily schedule can be flexible with opportunity to work weekend schedule or Saturday and/or Sunday availability a must on a rotating schedule with other field hands

  • Assist with farm maintenance such as fence repair and trellis work

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Gardening experience required. Strong desire to learn organic or low-input/sustainable vegetable production, experience is a plus. Must be self-motivated and have a solid work ethic, with a sense of urgency toward farm work. Must be able to take direction, as well as problem-solve independently.  Must be able to work in any weather. Must be able to use a computer for record keeping, excel & documents, emails and *company software (*you will be trained). High-School Graduate.

 

Preferred Skills: General carpentry skills as well as tractor experience are a plus, as well as experience with greenhouse growing. 

 

Salary Range: $16 to $17 hourly and can be commensurate with experience
