Winter at Crossroads

December 2025 Blog

Winter arrives quietly at Crossroads Farm. The rush of harvest is long behind us, the
fields have gone still, and a clean layer of snow settles over everything, this winter seemingly bringing more snow than recent years already.
Snow has a way of softening the land. Fence lines blur, rows disappear, and the familiar shapes of the farm become something simpler and calmer. The soil rests beneath its white blanket, protected and patient. Even the sounds change. Footsteps crunch instead of thud, animals rest and their mischievous sounds vanish for a moment. This slower pace gives us space to reflect. We think back on the season that just ended: what thrived, what struggled, and what surprised us. Farming teaches humility every year, and winter is when those lessons settle in. We review and remember the year that passed and mull
over how we could improve.

And with that reflection comes excitement. While the ground sleeps, our minds begin to wake up to the next season. Seed catalogs start to pile up, their pages full of color and promise. We sketch out crop plans, dream about new varieties, and talk through small changes that might make a big difference. Winter is the planning season, where hope takes shape long before it ever touches the soil.

December also reminds us that rest is part of the cycle. Just as the soil needs time to recover, so do the people who tend it. Evenings are slower, meals linger a little longer, and there’s time to sit by the window and watch snow fall. This season teaches us that productivity isn’t only about growth it’s also about patience. Rest is critical, the dust in the brain can finally settle after a long hard season.

As the year draws to a close, we’re grateful for this pause. Grateful for the snow that protects our fields, the quiet that restores our energy, and the chance to dream without rushing. The farm may look still right now, but beneath the surface, plans are forming and excitement is growing.

This time of year allows us to reflect on the community. It’s the people who shop in our store, ask us for unique veg like kohlrabi, and all their dogs on the paths and enjoy summer nights with their children, after they have class at the farm. Humans have grown crops for a very, very long time, it’s a trade as old as time. What makes this farm special is the community, without each and every one of you we couldn’t be who we are. It takes a village they say, farming teaches you it takes many, many hands to build something.

Spring will be here before we know it, warmth and sunlight will be abundant again. For now, take time to rest too, enjoy your favorite foods and drinks with your loved ones. Community is hard to come by this time of year, so be sure to find ways to be social, and when we are back in spring we will all gather once more.

A happy and healthy New Year to all!
