Field Hand

Compensation: $17–$20 per hour (based on experience)

Schedule: Full-time, beginning as soon as possible through November

 

About the Farm:

At Crossroads, we endeavor to provide experiential agricultural education to everyone through the collaborative effort of growing on our 5-acre organic farm. Crossroads is part of the Nassau Land Trust, a not-for-profit organization composed of a volunteer board of directors working together to manage the farm through an operating agreement with Nassau County. In addition to growing food, Crossroads operates an on-site farm store where all of our produce and farm products are sold directly to the community. The farm is an integral part of the surrounding community and it couldn’t thrive without you.

Position Overview:

The Field Hand plays an important role in the day-to-day operations of the farm. This position works closely with the Field Manager and farm staff to carry out essential fieldwork that supports crop production and the overall health of the farm. This is a hands-on outdoor position suited for individuals who enjoy physical work, teamwork, and being part of a mission-driven farm that serves the community.

Preferred Experience:

 

• Experience working on an organic or regenerative farm is preferred but not required

• Experience operating small farm equipment is a plus

• Experience working with chickens is a plus

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Field Work

• Assist with planting, seeding, transplanting, and harvesting crops

• Perform cultivation and weeding to maintain healthy crop beds

• Support irrigation setup and monitoring

• Assist with soil preparation, compost application, and bed maintenance

• Help maintain clean and organized field areas

• Harvest & Post-Harvest

• Harvest crops according to farm standards

• Wash, sort, and prepare produce for sale in the farm store

• Ensure harvested crops meet quality standards

Equipment & Tools:

• Safely use hand tools and small farm equipment

• Assist with basic maintenance and proper storage of tools

• Support tractor-related tasks when directed by the Field Manager

Farm Store Support:

• Help ensure consistent harvests to supply the on-site farm store

• Assist with packing produce for retail availability

Animal Care:

• Assist with basic care and maintenance of chickens as needed

Community & Education Support:

• Work alongside volunteers during volunteer days

• Help maintain a welcoming and positive environment for visitors to the farm
